University of Florida’s Top-Ranked Supercomputer

The University of Florida’s stature in the field of computer science received a boost when Top500, the most cited worldwide list of supercomputers, ranked the university’s HiPerGator artificial intelligence (AI) as the most energy-efficient and second most powerful supercomputer owned by a university in the United States. The HiPerGator AI also ranks as the second most energy-efficient supercomputer globally, according to the 2021 rankings.
The HiPerGator supercomputer commenced operation in 2013. Its performance has increased through an $80 million donation by Chris Malachowsky, a University of Florida alumnus, and from NVIDIA, the technology company he co-founded. The firm is a global leader in rapid computing and AI.
In early 2021, the University of Florida announced that the supercomputer would be made available to the whole State University System for research and educational undertakings. This initiative will immensely improve research opportunities and ultimately help the country produce a tech-savvy workforce needed for the 21st century.
